Hello Queen’s Louisiana Po-Boy Cafe

A friend of mine recently posted a very good question on Facebook, what is a ‘must try’ place in San Francisco.  Another friend replied that Queen’s Louisiana Po-Boy Cafe was a must try place! She tried it the same day and loved it. So today, we had to try it for ourselves!  When we walked in, we loved the rich colors and the touch of  Louisiana in the casual space. They had a fairly large menu and we were not too sure what to order so we asked the person at the counter, I am pretty sure he was the owner.  He let us know that the catfish was what they sold most and the gumbo was voted San Francisco’s Best Gumbo in the SF Weekly. We ordered the “Big Easy” Seafood Platter with Fried Catfish. This platter came with two sides and we selected the Sweet Potato Fries Dusted with Cinnamon Sugar and the Jambalaya. We also ordered a bowl of Gumbo.

And WOW, everything was sooo tasty! The catfish was perfectly fried and the fish was tender and juicy! I loved the sweet potato fries , they were well done and perfectly crisped! The gumbo was voted best for a reason, it was sooo delicious, offering a strong seafood flavor and peppery aftertaste. The jambalaya was good too, but it was a little too much tomato sauce taste for me.  While eating everything, I couldn’t help but keep looking at the menu, I noticed the Biegnets, so I just had to order it to go so that I could bring something home.  The owner let me know that they taste best when hot, so we ate one while we were at the restaurant. At first I thought they would be little pieces but when I opened the bag, they were huge! We shared one and they were crispy outside and perfectly moist inside. And I am still enjoying them as I am blogging this! I can’t wait to go back for Round 2!

Yummy Thai Food at Bangkok Garden

It was my first time eating at Bangkok Garden.  I’ve probably drove pass this place quite a lot, but I’ve never noticed it. My sister-in-law suggested it, so here we were, in this very charming Thai restaurant. I have to admit, we haven’t had Thai food served family style in a long time, usually we go to the restaurants where we’ll just all order our own dish. So, it was really nice to taste a little bit of everything.

We ordered a lot of food, we were hungry! We ordered the Angel Wings (deep fried chicken wings stuffed with ground pork, chicken, noodles and mushrooms), Tom Yum Gai (chicken in spicy and sour soup with lemon grass), Yum Nuea (char-broiled slices of beef with mint leaves, red onion and lime juice), Tofu Eggplant (sauteed eggplant with fried tofu, onion, basil, coconut milk and chili paste), Yellow Curry with Duck (sliced duck with coconut milk, onion, potatoes and yellow curry paste), Minty Chicken (chopped chicken sauteed with chili paste and sweet basil) and the Pad Thai (pan fried rice stick noodles with prawns, chicken, eggs and bean sprouts)! I have to admit, there was no bad dish, EVERYTHING we ordered was delicious and so perfect over rice! We will definitely be back again!

Sometimes, I Just Crave IN-N-OUT

Really, sometimes, I just crave IN-N-OUT…I don’t even care if it’s not healthy, I just want it! And I love that I can custom my meal!  So on one of those weekends while the hubby was out of town, I decided to get myself this great big dinner and of course I ordered my favorites from the Secret Menu!  I got myself the Cheeseburger and requested Grilled Onions, the Fries Animal Style and the Neopolitan Shake! The only bummer was that I forgot to order my Fries Well Done cause I LOVE Crispy Fries! After I ate it all, I felt a bit guilty, but at the same time, I enjoyed every bite with a smile on my face, so I got over it.

Hong Kong Style Dinner at Cafe Orchid

Yesterday I was too lazy to cook dinner after picking up the hubby at the airport,  so we went to grab a quick dinner at Cafe Orchid. We’ve been here a couple of times, I don’t love it here, but they do have some good deals. Their deals and food are not as  good as some other places, but  if you are just looking for a quick bite, it’s not bad either. Millbrae has quite a few Hong Kong Fast Food style restaurants, and Cafe Orchid is quite new, and although it doesn’t offer the best food, it seems to be busy.

We both ordered a meal that came with a cup of Milk Tea and Sweet Buns.  I got the Pork Chop with the Sweet Corn Sauce over Spaghetti for $8.50 and my hubby ordered the Sizzling Rib Eye with Tomato Sauce over Rice for $12.99. His meal also came with the Soup of the Day, it was actually Cream of Corn, but it was really salty so I put some of his soup into my pasta and used it as additional sauce! Overall, our meal was okay, not great, just okay.  Some may question why I even come here if I don’t really like it, but everytime I come here , I hope to pick that one dish that I will love at this place. I just haven’t tasted it yet.

Tea Time at Broadway Cafe

Today I had to pick up my mom in Chinatown, we decided to go to Broadway Cafe for their tea time meal between 3:00pm – 6:00pm.  They actually call it their Happy Hour Specials Menu, and they offer a huge menu selection at discounted prices. The Happy Hour Specials are between 9:00am – 11:00am, 3:00pm-6:00pm and 10:00pm to 1:00am.   For those who have a difficult time ordering at a Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown, they have lots of photos so it makes thing much easier.

During the watermelon season, they serve a Watermelon Juice for cheap. Everytime I come here, I have to get one, I ordered it before we even got our menus. For our meal, we ordered the Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Fried Pig’s Intestine, Drunken Chicken and Bean Sprout Chow Mein.   I have to admit, I couldn’t find myself to eat the Fried Pig’s Intestine, but my mom had to order it and she almost finished the whole dish on her own, I guess she’s been craving it for a while! I loved everything else we ordered. The Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings were perfectly crisped and flavored, the Drunken Chicken was really tasty with a hint of alcohol flavor and the Bean Sprout Chow Mein was perfectly stirred and fried, it was not soggy at all! All the dishes were rather big, I was actually expecting smaller portions since they were at discounted prices. And when we got the bill, it was $18.00 plus gratuity! You really can’t beat a price like that!

Delious Breakfast at Anchorage 5

Since it was nothing but fog in San Francisco, we decided to drive out to Sausalito to find some sunshine. On the drive to Sausalito, I was trying to figure out where to eat the entire time. And don’t worry, I wasn’t driving, only navigating. There are lots of restaurants along Bridgeway but they are all touristy, a bit expensive and some of the food are just mediocre since people normally go for the ambiance.   We were hungry and we wanted good food. So, I just went through Yelp and found Anchorage 5 and read about their delicious breakfasts and every review was good, so we decided to give it a try. It was definitely off the beaten path and tourists would never find this local joint. They don’t have waterfront views, but the setting was comfortable, offering a nautical atmosphere.  The lady who was the host and server was really sweet and she asked us if it was our first time here and how we found them. To her, we were newbies cause we noticed that she said hi to everyone who came in, they were all regulars. I ordered the Crab Benedict  which was seasonal and my husband ordered the Corned Beef Hash.  And wow, they were huge portions and sooo delicious, we looked like we licked our plates!

Little Sheep Hot Pot, Nothing but Comfort

Now Little Sheep Hot Pot is what I call true hot pot…try to get here early cause it is always busy! I love hot pot, it is interactive and fun to stuff yourself! The beauty of this place is their Half and Half Soup Base, one side Spicy and the other side Original, both offering Chinese herbs!  The flavors of the soups are just incredible!  I decided to go with my hubby after a hard work week, and eating here definitely cheered me up! For our hot pot ingredients, we ordered the Supreme Lamb Shoulder Slice, Premium Beef Slice, Cuttlefish Paste, Watercress, Sliced Taro, Tofu Combo Platter, Shiitake Mushrooms, Taro Vermicelli Knots and Udon Noodles.  We were introduced to the Leek Flower Dipping Sauce from some friends and had to get an order too! There are so many things to choose from on their menu, but my favorite is definitely the Cuttlefish Paste, if you go, you must try it! Eat slow, relax and enjoy!

Hello Pancho Villa Taqueria

Over the weekend, we went to eat at Pancho Villa Taqueria in San Mateo. There’s actually a Pancho Villa Taqueria in San Francisco too, I’m not sure if it’s the same owner but the menus and restaurants do look very similar.  Simple, casual, busy and a great big menu!

I love Mexican food, I can always eat a burrito, tacos, quesadillas or enchiladas! I love the flavors and I really love carne asada. It was a hot day, so eating here was a great choice. And of course, with the hot weather, it gave me another reason to order the  refreshing Watermelon Agua Fresca, they always has a variety of fresh agua frescas!

Who Can Ever Deny Popeyes?!

I am not a huge fan of fast food, but Popeyes is just sooo good! On a lazy day this weekend, I really didn’t feel like cooking dinner. And I must admit that on my drive home, I kept daydreaming about the juicy spicy fried chicken. So yes, I had to do it, I stopped by a Popeye’s and got us a family meal with spicy fried chicken, the buttery biscuits and the mashed potatoes served with the Cajun gravy, and of course , I had to add an order of the Cajun rice! It was so greasy and bad for us, but we enjoyed every minute of it!

Yummy Ramen at Katana-Ya

I know that there are mixed reviews about the ramen at Katana-Ya , but I personally enjoy this place! The only downside is the line. Since we were downtown catching a movie, we wanted to stay downtown for dinner and Katana-Ya was a great choice since it’s closes late.  Plus, we thought a warm bowl of ramen would be great for a chilly night. When we got there around 9:30pm, there was still a line, but we were hungry and craving it so we decided to wait. It’s a VERY small place, so don’t even think about bringing more than a group of 5 people, you will wait forever! We learned from a friend from our first time here that the Toro was really good, and it was.  So this time, we decided to see if they had Toro Nigiri again, and they did, so I was super happy cause I couldn’t wait to eat all that fatty goodness! And of course, we also ordered my favorite Uni Nigiri! And both of these were extremely fresh and delicious. If I didn’t order my big bowl of Deep Fried Chicken Ramen with Miso soup, I probably could have ordered more Nigiri! Until next time…..we shall meet again!
