Yummy Dinner at San Mateo Prime

Okay okay, I know most House of Prime Rib fans are not big fans of Broadway Prime and San Mateo Prime. However, when it is a last minute spontaneous dinner, it is quite difficult to get a table at House of Prime Rib.  So we decided to go to San Mateo Prime, where there’s parking and centrally located for friends who live in San Jose, Hayward or San Francisco!

This place has a nice comfortable ambiance, unfortunately it is also very quiet due to the lack of guests. All of us ordered something different, you would think we would all ordered the prime rib but that wasn’t the case. I ordered the Dry Aged New York Steak, medium rare, charred with crushed black peppercorn, red wine and butter. For my sides, I ordered the creamed corn and fresh garlic linguine. The hubby ordered the Colorado Rack of Lamb, medium rare, seared, roasted and glazed with a fresh mint butter jus. For his sides, he got the baked potato with everything and creamed spinach. All the entrees include a salad, two sides and of course a freshly baked Popover!

I have to say, both of our entrees were fabulous, cooked and seasoned to perfection! I was happy with every bite and have no complaints and cannot wait to return for another visit! The service was also very good, I had leftover sides and took it to work, the server actually added 2 more sides in my to-go box! AWESOME, it made a great lunch!

Some Warm Grubbin’ Food at Turtle Tower

Today I decided to take my mom to the Asian Art Museum to get ourselves cultured. But before our visit, I took her to Turtle Tower which is located just 3 blocks from the museum.  We got there right around lunch time, and the place was already packed!  We ordered the Spring Rolls with Shrimp,  I ordered the popular Chicken Noodle Soup and my mom ordered the Chicken Noodle Soup with Chicken Giblets.  The rolls were really fresh, but the best part of the meal, the Chicken Noodle Soup of course! Wow, the soup here is just so good, I usually add chili paste whenever I have Vietnamese soup noodles, but I don’t do that here. As I saw my mom getting chili paste, I quickly told her to taste the soup before ruining it!  She tasted the soup and just smiled.  This meal was perfect for this cold chilly day, and we were happy to know that we were walking it off at the museum!

A Night at Candybar

Yesterday we had last minute dinner plans and decided to go to a restaurant near Candybar so that we could go there for some desserts afterwards.  I got to Candybar early so that I could catch up with my friend who owns the place.  I arrived when they just opened and as I sat, people just kept coming in, it was super busy. I never knew people enjoyed desserts and wine at 6:00pm, but they apparently do.  I told my friend that we were planning to have dinner at Little Star Pizza around the block and will return afterward, he then let me know that we could actually order Little Star Pizza and eat it at Candybar, he even had the menu there! It turns out they do this often. It worked out perfectly, we just called for our pizza, picked it up and brought it back to enjoy,  they gave us plates and silverware for our dinner, we were all set!

It was actually my first time having Little Star Pizza, I’ve heard great reviews and was excited to try it! We ordered the fresh organic mixed greens served with cherry tomatoes, red bells, red onions, gorgonzola cheese and chopped walnuts, tossed with a housemade vinaigrette dressing and the large 12″ Classic Deep Dish Pizza topped with sausage, mushrooms, onions, green bells and lots of tomato sauce! The food was all sooo good, the pizza was very saucy and I really liked the little crunchy cornmeal bits too!

Then it was time for dessert! Candybar has an extensive dessert menu and everything sounds delightful! For those who cannot decide. they offer a ‘Dessert for Two’ Option,  featuring a selection of four desserts for $25.00 which is a great deal! We  tasted the Chocolate Financier Cake served with frozen Bavarian cream, cranberry sauce, almonds, breton crumble/the Japanese Cheesecake served with graham cracker streusel, honeydew, champagne granita, guava sorbet/the Strawberry Limeade featuring strawberry mousse, vanilla cake, calamansi cream, strawberries/the Buttermilk Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta featuring cocoa macaron, balsamic strawberry reduction, strawberries/the Lavender Honey Creme Fraiche Semi Freddo featuring almond brittle, nutella powder, cantaloupe/and the Lemon Tart featuring Frozen Meringue, Coconut Macaroon, Coconut Snow!

Creative and innovative, every dessert and it’s complementary ingredients blended together perfectly, from the guava sorbet, almond brittle, coconut snow to the frozen Bavarian cream, all these elements were an unexpected surprise. How much did we enjoy it, take a look at the photo on the bottom right, that’s how much we enjoyed it!  For those who love desserts, you must pay Candybar a visit!

Red Velvet Cupcakes from Citizen Cake

Yesterday my cousin let me know that he had extra red velvet cupcakes that he wanted to give me. Free cupcakes…YES!  Then I found out they were Red Velvet Cupcakes with cream cheese-pomegranate frosting by Citizen Cake! Double YES!  So I picked up these delicate plush cupcakes and they smelled so sweet and fruity! The cake was good, maybe a little overpowered by the cream cheese-pomegranate frosting but still very good all around!

Delivery from Omaha Steaks

Recently our bank sent us mail regarding a free gift worth $150.00, so we decided to check out the gift selections. There were luggage sets, watches, digital cameras and a lot of other things we don’t need or have room for. So, after much consideration, we decided to go with the Omaha Steaks food set! Yes, no surprise here, we decided to go with the food.

A few weeks ago, Kent got a huge box at work! The package included four Stuffed Sole with Scallops and Crabmeat, four Gourmet Burgers, four Gourmet Franks, four Oven Roasted Chicken Breast, four Top Sirloins, four Filet Mignons and ten Potato au Gratin!  So far we’ve had the  Top Sirloins, which I thought were only okay since I like fatty marbled meat.   We also tried the Stuffed Sole with Scallops and Crabmeat and the Potato au Gratin. The Potato au Gratin actually reminds me of a humongous tater tot, it’s good but not what I expected, there was no cheese. However, we really enjoyed the Stuffed Sole with Scallops and Crabmeat, it’s moist, creamy and flavorful!  We still have to try the rest, I’m hoping that the Filet Mignon will be next and hopefully it doesn’t disappoint! I have no complaints, after all, it was free!

An Unexpected Find, Ramen at Oidon

Okay okay, we decided to go to Ramen Dojo again, and again, there were about 15 people ahead of us! It’s unbelievable how busy this place is! Anyways, we left and decided to try something new, we were yelping in the car and as we made a decision and  began walking to the restaurant, we noticed Oidon so we stopped to look at the photos, they have ramen, udon and champon! So, why not, we decided to give this place a try!  It’s located upstairs, very small, plain, and not busy at all, there were a total of 4 people dining in the restaurant.  I got the Tonkotsu Ramen, the hubby got the Chicken Karaage with Soy Ramen and we also ordered a Takoyaki. One thing about this place, they do not serve stewed pork, so don’t expect to have it. After we sat, they gave us a small bowl of Edamame. I couldn’t help but think how other restaurants would have charged me for a bowl of Edamame, so it was a nice touch to get it complimentary.  After we ordered, we  checked yelp again and that’s when we realized they were known for their Champon, but it was too late, we already ordered.

We got our big bowls of ramen and YUMMY, to our surprise they were very good! Both of ours were flavorful, the ramen and the soup base was good!  My Tonkotsu had cha shu, bean sprouts and bamboo shoots. My hubby’s Chicken Karaage with Soy had the Shoyu soup base with Chicken Karaage, the pieces were huge but were not fried well, even though they tasted good the batter fell apart fast!  The Takoyaki had too much batter and not enough Tako (Octopus). One thing people must realize is that my hubby and I always compare our ramens to the ramens we’ve had in Japan, and then we compare it to the ramens we’ve had in the States. Of course places are never as good as Japan, but this place is not bad, it is pretty good. The other plus side is that there was no long wait and they didn’t charge us an arm and a leg for add-on’s, everything you would want is already in the bowl! However, I think that I should start carrying fried garlic in my purse, it’s definitely a flavor missing in my ramens. We will definitely return to Oidon, I’ll have to try the Champon next!  One thing I did just learn, they are not opened for dinner, so lunch only!

Oh, and one more plus about this restaurant, they have a great Japanese market located just downstairs, the Suruki Supermarket.  They had so many Japanese products as well as prepackaged cooked cuisines and fresh sashimi! Don’t think I left the market empty handed!

Sweet Delights at Stella Pastry & Cafe

One of my favorite dessert places in San Francisco is Stella Pastry & Cafe. I used to come here all the time for my sweet cravings! Over the weekend, we decided to come here for dessert and coffee, it’s been a long time since my last visit. As I was devouring the sweets, all I kept thinking was, ‘Damn, I miss this place!’ Stella Pastry & Cafe is a charming little place, it’s not a huge space like the other coffee joints in the area, I love how it’s  so very cozy, there’s probably only 2 tables that can seat up to 4 people.

We ordered ourselves the Chocolate Fedora with dark chocolate flakes, the layered Napoleon, the signature and prize winning Sacripantina and a plate of chewy Amoretti Cookies, complemented with our cups of caffeine of course! All the desserts were perfect, not too sweet, fluffy and addictive!  Although I no longer recognized the staff who worked there, the desserts were still as delicious! If you are ever in the area, want some sweet delights and a nice quiet night, stop by this quaint neighborhood spot!
