Spices & Spices at Chutney Restaurant

I love Chutney, and I can’t tell you how many times I think about grabbing food to go to bring home. I probably think about it everytime I pass by Jones Street. The restaurant is not located at the best locations in San Francisco, it is in the Tenderloin and there are lots of crazy loud homeless people roaming the area. We walked there from downtown and had to change paths here and there to avoid the really crowded homeless areas cause I was actually scared. But as scary as it can be outside, once you walk into Chutney, you will suddenly feel safe.  Maybe it’s due to the smell of the spices, the long line waiting to put in their orders or pay for what they just ate, the warm crowded space or the nice bus boys setting and cleaning one table after another.

It’s been a while since we’ve visited, and as we were walking there, all I could think about was the warm, creamy, spicy and sweet tikka masala. We ordered a lot for just two of us and EVERYTHING was full of spices and delicious, just the way I remember it! We had the Boneless Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo cooked with Potatoes and a spicy sauce and Lamb Seekh Kabab which is ground lamb marinated in spices on skewers and cooked in the clay oven. Of course we had to get an order of the Regular Naan, Onion Naan and a Rice Pullao which is saffron flavored basmati rice.  As we enjoyed our hearty meal, we also enjoyed the sweet complimentary Chai.

Dip your naan in the tikka masala sauce and you will not want to waste any of it, you might even consider licking the plate at the end of your meal! Yes…it’s that good!
