House of Pancakes…Chinese Pancakes That Is…

After reading about this place, I had to bring my family to test it out! House of Pancakes does not serve your typical American pancakes, it serves warm crispy and fried flavorful Chinese pancakes with marinated meat. It’s a very small restaurant so be aware that there may be a wait.

We tried three different pancakes: the Pork Pancake, the Sesame Pancake with Beef and the Beef Roll Pancake! All three were very different and very good! The meat for the Pork Pancake was juicy and flavorful, while the meat for the Beef Pancakes were a sweet soy sauce flavor. The pancakes were crispy and fried perfectly!

We also shared Lamb Potstickers, Lamb Skewers, Fresh Cucumbers and the Hand Pulled Noodles with Mustard Green and Pork. Okay, if you like lamb, you will like the juicy and not so gamey Lamb Potstickers. The Lamb Skewers had a nice spice but a bit gamey and on the drier side.  The cucumbers served with soy sauce and sesame oil were just a way for us to have vegetables, but they weren’t that great. I do have to say, although the broth for the Hand Pulled Noodles with Mustard Green and Pork was very light, I enjoyed it after having fried pancakes and other pan fried dishes. If you want more soup flavor, just add the hot sauce! The fresh hand pulled noodles were chewy and doughy at the same time, I really enjoyed the texture!

We read a few mixed reviews before getting there, but we had a good experience, enjoyed the food and would definitely go back!

I Dumpling = “WOW”

Over the weekend, my sister told us about I Dumpling located in Redwood City, she passed by it but never tried it.  So, we decided to drive to a city we pretty much never visit unless we have jury duty.

We went there on a Sunday afternoon and there was a wait. I think it depends on what time you arrive, we got there at 1:30pm and the place was still busy. It’s a very small, simple and casual restaurant that seats about 25 people.

The three of us decided to pig out! We only got one order of Xiao Long Baos so that we could order lots of other dishes,  the Xiao Long Baos skin was light, the pork in the dumpling was fresh and tender, and last but the least, it was soupy!  We also ordered the plump Shrimp and Chive Dumplings, the crispy Green Onion Pancake, the Spicy Beef Tendon with Parsley, the delicious tingly Spicy Sliced Beef Soup with fresh Handmade Noodles that never got soggy and the tender Fried Pork Chop served with Rice, Ground Pork, Preserved Vegetables and a Soy Sauce marinated Egg.

The MUST:

Xiao Long Baos, Spicy Beef Tendon with Parsley and Fried Pork Chop served with Rice! The Shrimp and Chive Dumplings were good too but the skin was a little too doughy for us.

The food was so wonderful and flavorful that the three of us almost finished everything!  We are so impressed, we can’t wait to return for our next visit, it was definitely worth the drive! We found a new gem!

The Best Chinese Style Roast Duck at Cheung Hing

There are times my hubby and I crave the simple Chinese style BBQ food. When we have moments like these, we head to Cheung Hing, nothing fancy, just mom-and-popish! They have two locations, one in Sunset and one in Millbrae, and both of them serve delicious BBQ items! I ate a lot of Chinese style BBQ pork and duck growing up, my parents always bought something for dinner, at least once a week! I still remember the first time I brought home a roast duck from Cheung Hing, my parents LOVED it!!! I admit it, I had Cheung Hing’s phone number saved on my mobile phone back in the days when I couldn’t just google their number on my phone.

So yes, I had to get my favorite Roast Duck and Wonton with Lai Fun Soup Noodles! The Wontons are not that great, but the Roast Duck is always roasted to perfection, sweet and addicting! My hubby got himself a big plate of Roast Duck and Roast Pork over Rice, both meat items were sooo good! And since I was super hungry, we also ordered the Fried Tofu Stuffed with Pork and Fish Paste!

Next time, we will have to buy a Roast Duck for my mom, she wants to enjoy it with some steamed buns at home!

Dinner at the Kings-Kingdom of Dumplings & King of Noodles

Over the weekend we went to the Kingdom of Dumpling for some warm comfort food. We went on a Friday night and to our surprise we found parking and there was no line. Once we were seated, there were about 10 people waiting outside, we got really lucky, it was a good food sign for us! If you come here, don’t expect the best decor or the best service, it’s a small warm space with about 18 seats.

We started with the crunchy fresh Cucumbers served with a soy sesame garlic sauce, who would have thought this simple savory sauce would taste so good. The little boiled Shrimp and Pork Dumplings with Chives were juicy and the skin of the dumplings were made with the perfect dough, not too thick, not too thin. If you like spice, dip it in their hot sauce, I even dipped it into the sauce for the cucumbers.  We also really enjoyed the lightly ginger marinated tender Beef Tendon Soup Noodles served with bok choy and flat wide rice noodles. The biggest disappointment were the dried Xiao Long Boas.

The next day, a friend of ours wanted to go to the King of Noodles, a small Chinese restaurant. As we got the menus, we realized that this was almost the same menu from Kingdom of Dumpling! And then we found out they were sister restaurants, the only difference was that King of Noodles served hand pulled noodles! So while we were here, we ordered more dumplings and the fresh hand pulled chewy Noodles with Black Bean Sauce…it needed a little more soy sauce but the noodles texture was good!

Little Sheep is the Best on Those Cooold Nights

Last week we wanted to get some ramen at Ramen Dojo. But of course, no surprise, the line was super long and we really didn’t want to be behind 20 people or so! Luckily, there are many other restaurants in the area…so we decided to go to Little Sheep instead! It was a Friday night, so yes, there was a wait, but we were lucky that it only took about 15 minutes or so. Once you walk in, you will smell fumes of hot pot and lamb. So if you go, don’t wear anything you really care about because the smell will definitely stick!

I love Little Sheep, the Half and Half Soup Base, one side Spicy and the other side Original, both offering Chinese herbs is oh so delicious! We almost always order the same ingredients,  the Supreme Lamb Shoulder Slice, Premium Beef Slice, Cuttlefish Paste, Watercress, Sliced Daikons, Tofu Combo Platter, Shiitake Mushrooms, Taro Vermicelli Knots and Udon Noodles.  And of course we have to add the yummy Leek Flower Dipping Sauce! There are so many things to choose from on their menu, but my favorite is definitely the Cuttlefish Paste, if you go, you must try it! Eat slow, relax and enjoy!

Eve of the Passing Year Dinner with the Family at Asian Pearl Peninsula

We had our “Eve of the Passing Year” Dinner over the weekend. This traditional dinner is normally on Chinese New Year’s Eve, a day where families gather for their annual reunion dinner. Instead of cooking, we decided to have dinner at Asian Pearl Peninsula. Luckily we made reservations a few weeks ago, cause the place was packed with big family dinners! Looks like a lot of families decided to eat out! The other tradition mom tells us is that there needs to be an even number of dishes, so we ordered 6 dishes.  I just noticed that I was so busy eating that I forgot to take a photo of the Shrimp with Cashews, which was also a tasty dish!

We started with a delicious Cold Platter, with crunchy jellyfish, fatty roasted pork cheeks and roasted pork with crunchy pork skin!  We also got a Fish Stomach Soup, a Smooth Tofu and Shrimp over Eggs on a Sizzling Plate,  a Crab Sauce over Pea Shoots and Fried Oysters with Red Onions on a Sizzling Plate!  We always enjoy the food at this restaurant for dim sum and for dinners,  it’s not very expensive and it’s a great place for our family dinners!

A Big Big Dinner at San Tung

This evening we celebrated a birthday at San Tung. We had a big group of 14 people, so yes…the wait was quite long even though we had reservations. It was a Friday, so it was extremely busy. We ordered a lot of food, we doubled or tripled our orders!  The beauty of eating with a lot of people is that we can order more and taste dishes we may not have tried in the past.  As I am sitting here typing and completely full, I can’t believe how much food we devoured! Nothing but spicy, sweet and garlicky  flavors from 80% of our dishes! We had their Sizzling Rice Soup, Dumplings, Potstickers, Original Dry Fried Chicken (the most popular dish here which we tripled), Dry Fried Shrimp, Dried Fried Calamari, Hot Braised Flounder Filet, Black Bean Sauce Noodles, Dan Dan Noodles, Five Spice Beef Soup Noodles, Mu Shu Chicken and  Dried Sauteed String Beans! Here’s a photo, courtesy of a friend cause my hands were too busy working on the food!  I definitely got my San Tung fix!

Good Ol’ Chinese Food at MenKee Wonton

Okay, I am sure everyone’s been to this place but me. We were on Noriega Street but couldn’t decide where to eat, so MenKee Wonton was a suggestion from my hubby! This place was pretty busy inside the restaurant, but it did not compare to all the calls they got for take out! OMG, it was neverending, from my understanding, it is 10% off for take out. That could be why they were extremely busy on a Sunday afternoon, but really, the food is already really inexpensive!

The only problem with it being busy for take out, is that they kind of  forgot about the patrons in the restaurant, it took about 25 minutes until we got our first order. We ordered 3 dishes-the Deep Fried stuffed Bean Cake, Prawn Scramble Egg Fried Flat Noodle and Fukien Style Combo Fried Rice. When we got our Deep Fried stuffed Bean Cake, we scarfed it down because we were so hungry! It was a good appetizer for $2.95 and it had a black bean sauce flavored gravy…the Bean Cake was really good but the small piece of fish stuffing was not all that great. We loved the Prawn Scramble Egg Fried Flat Noodle and Fukien Style Combo Fried Rice, both had a light gravy on top to mix with the carbs.  After we got the dishes, we wished we had ordered another noodles dish because both of these dishes had similar tastes and gravy. We saw and smelled other peoples dishes and they all looked really good! All the food definitely had enough fire on the wok and we will definitely return, maybe for some take out!

My Hubby’s Turn to Reminisce at Just Wonton

It was my first time eating at Just Wonton. My husband said he wanted to bring me since I mentioned that I’ve never been. But I think what he really wanted to do was reminisce about his high school days. He said he used to come here when he was young and had no money.  It is definitely a hole in the wall, nothing fancy. Of course we had to order the Noodle Soup with Wonton, we actually ordered it with Beef Brisket too.  Growing up, I really enjoyed Wonton Noodle Soup, it was one of my favorites. But as I got older, I realized that restaurants no longer made it with the noodles perfectly crunchy so I rarely order it now. Sadly, the only time I get really good Wonton Noodle Soup is in Hong Kong.  So as I tasted this at Just Wonton, I was skeptical. The first few bites were good, but I had to eat it fast so that the noodles wouldn’t get soggy. I thought the wontons were only okay, I thought the beef brisket was not bad. But, what I really liked was adding the hot sauce they made to complement the dishes, it was made with preserved turnips and black beans.   I also read that they had the best Soft Scrambled Egg and Shrimp Over Ho Fun (thick rice noodles), and yes, I was definitely not disappointed with this dish! It was really good, the eggs and rice noodles tasted silky smooth.  If I ever feel like having this dish, I will definitely come here!

Capital Restaurant: The Best Chicken Wings!

Okay, this is no joke, everyone and their mama probably knows about the Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings at Capital Restaurant! They have the BEST chicken wings in town! I first learned about this place from my sister, chicken wings is her favorite dish! Today I was in Chinatown running errands and I just so happened to be across the street so I just had to do it, I had to order it to go! The crazy thing is, everyone who came in after me ordered an order of chicken wings too!  If you are ever in the area, test this place out, they have other great Chinese dishes too or you can just order this to go, you won’t be disappointed!
